Why the Fuel Pump Driver Module Fails

The FPCM controls fuel pump speed by varying the voltage and PWM signal based on demand from the ECM. When it fails, fuel delivery is compromised. Common symptoms:

Long Crank / Hard Start The engine cranks for several seconds before firing or requires multiple key cycles. The FPCM isn't commanding the pump to prime on key-on.

No Start / No Fuel Pump Prime Key to RUN and no pump hum from the tank. The module has failed and isn't powering the pump.

Stalling Under Load or at Idle The engine runs but stalls during acceleration or at idle. The FPCM can't maintain the fuel rail pressure the ECM is requesting.

Reduced Engine Power / Limp Mode The ECM detects insufficient fuel pressure and limits engine output to protect the drivetrain.

DTC P0087 — Fuel Rail Pressure Too Low The most common code with FPCM failure. The ECM commands a target pressure, the module can't deliver, and P0087 sets.

DTC P0230 — Fuel Pump Primary Circuit Indicates a fault in the control circuit between the ECM and the fuel pump module.

What Is a Fuel Pump Driver Module?

The Fuel Pump Driver Module controls fuel pump operation by receiving a commanded pressure target from the ECM and adjusting pump voltage to match. This variable-speed control improves fuel economy and reduces pump wear compared to a simple relay-driven system. On these platforms the module is mounted on or near the fuel tank.
