How to Program a GM Radio to Your VIN (MyLink, IntelliLink & Global B)
You swapped in a radio from another vehicle — junkyard, upgrade, or replacement for a dead one — and it won't work. Maybe it shows "locked," maybe it throws theft/anti-theft messages, maybe it just won't fully function. That's normal. GM radios are tied to the vehicle, and a swapped unit has to be programmed to your VIN before it behaves.
Why GM radios are VIN-locked
Modern GM infotainment is a networked module like any other — it carries VIN and configuration data, and many have anti-theft (theftlock) tied to the vehicle. Move one between vehicles and it knows it's in the wrong place. Until it's reprogrammed to your VIN and configured for your car, features stay locked or the unit won't operate correctly.
It depends on the generation
The programming path changes with the radio's era:
- Older GM radios (roughly 2000–2014) — programming and theftlock/unlocking for the classic units.
- MyLink / IntelliLink (IO5 / IO6, ~2014–2020) — the touchscreen infotainment generation, programmed to your VIN.
- Global B (2019–2026) — the newest architecture; infotainment radios here are VIN-programmed within the newer, tighter system. (More on Global B in our Global B explainer.)
Different generations, same core issue: the radio has to be told which vehicle it now lives in.
What radio programming actually does
- Writes your VIN to the radio so the vehicle network accepts it.
- Clears theftlock / anti-theft tied to the old vehicle.
- Sets the configuration for your options so features work.
The DIY reality
Some of this needs factory-level programming tools and access that most people don't have set up for a one-off radio. That's why a swapped radio often stumps a home installer even when the wiring is perfect — the hardware's fine, it just isn't programmed. We handle that part mail-in or remotely depending on the unit.
FAQ
My swapped radio says "locked" — is it dead?
Usually not. It's theftlocked or unprogrammed for your vehicle. Programming it to your VIN typically resolves it.
Do you need the radio shipped in?
Depends on the generation — some are mail-in, some can be handled remotely. Send us the year/model and we'll tell you.
Will any radio from the same model work?
Generally it needs to be a compatible unit for your vehicle, then programmed to your VIN. Confirm with us before you buy one.
