Ford PATS Relearn & Key Programming | PCM Parameter Reset
PATS — Passive Anti-Theft System, also badged SecuriLock — has been on Fords since 1996. A transponder in the key head answers a challenge from a coil around the ignition lock cylinder. If the answer is wrong or missing, the PCM disables fuel and spark and the engine starts and stalls within a second or two.
Two different jobs get confused with each other. Sort out which one you're doing first.
| What changed | What it needs |
|---|---|
| New or extra key | Key programming — often no tool required |
| New or used PCM | Parameter reset — scan tool required |
| New PATS module or instrument cluster | Full PATS initialization — scan tool required |
Programming a key with two working keys
Works on most 1998–2010 Fords, Lincolns and Mercurys with a bladed transponder key. You must already have two keys the vehicle accepts — with only one, this procedure does nothing.
- Insert the first programmed key and turn it to ON for at least 3 seconds. Do not start.
- Turn OFF and remove the key.
- Within 10 seconds, insert the second programmed key and turn to ON for at least 3 seconds.
- Turn OFF and remove the key.
- Within 10 seconds, insert the new unprogrammed key and turn to ON for at least 3 seconds.
- The theft indicator lights for about 3 seconds and goes out, confirming the key is stored.
- Turn OFF, then start the engine with the new key to verify.
Timing is the usual failure point. The gap between pulling one key and turning the next to ON has to be under 10 seconds. Have all three keys laid out before you start.
Parameter reset after a PCM swap
A replacement PCM does not know your vehicle's PATS module. Ford's fix is a parameter reset, which re-links the PCM to the existing PATS module or cluster and copies the key data across. This is a scan tool function — there is no key-cycle version of it.
- You need at least two working keys present for the reset to complete on most applications.
- Many models run a 10-minute timed security access before the tool will write. Put a maintainer on the battery.
- On some years the reset can only be performed a limited number of times on a given PCM.
Tools that can do it
| Tool | Notes |
|---|---|
| Ford IDS / FDRS | Factory. Needs a licensed VCM adapter and a subscription. |
| FORScan | Free software, but PATS functions need the extended license (free trial available) and an adapter with MS-CAN — an OBDLink EX or a switched HS/MS ELM327. Coverage is model specific. |
| Autel IM508 / IM608 | Broad Ford coverage including all-keys-lost on many years. |
| Advanced Diagnostics Smart Pro | Locksmith standard, Ford software pack required. |
2011 and newer: Ford tightened PATS considerably. All-keys-lost and some parameter resets on these require dealer-level access or a current aftermarket immobilizer tool with online security calculation. Check coverage against your specific VIN before you buy anything or take the vehicle apart.
PATS codes and what they point at
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| B1600 | Transponder signal not received — no read at all. Suspect the key chip, the transceiver ring at the lock cylinder, or its wiring. |
| B1601 | Key read but not programmed to this vehicle. |
| B1602 | Partial or corrupt key code received. Often a damaged key or interference at the ring. |
| B1213 | Fewer than two keys programmed. You'll need a tool to add another. |
| B10A2 | Transceiver module signal invalid. |
| P1260 | Theft detected — the PCM has immobilized the engine. |
| P1270 | Engine RPM or vehicle speed limiter reached (seen alongside PATS faults on some years). |
Start-and-stall with no PATS code stored
Check the communication line between the PCM and the PATS module or cluster before condemning either. An open there behaves exactly like a rejected key, and on EEC-V era vehicles a corroded connector at the cluster is a common cause.
Aftermarket keys and interference
- Cheap uncut transponder blanks frequently won't take a program. Buy a known chip type for your application.
- A second Ford key, a toll transponder, or a second fob on the same ring can interfere with the read at the cylinder. Program with a single key on the ring and nothing else nearby.
- Phone chargers and dash cams plugged into the lighter socket have been documented to interfere with the coil read on some models. Unplug everything before diagnosing.
