How to Bench Flash a GM P59 PCM (Wiring + Step-by-Step)
Bench flashing means programming a GM PCM off the vehicle — on your workbench instead of through the OBD-II port in the truck. It's how you recover a module that won't talk in the car, load an OS or calibration before install, or flash a spare unit. On the P59 (the 2005–2007 truck PCM with the blue/green connectors) it's straightforward once you have the setup right — and easy to brick if you skip a step.
Here's what you need, how it's wired, and the mistakes that kill modules.
What you need
- A clean 12V power supply. A spare lead-acid battery is ideal. A cheap AC adapter can work, but a weak or noisy supply is a real cause of failed flashes — don't let power drop mid-write.
- A bench harness that breaks out the PCM connector to power, ground, ignition, and the data line. You can build one from the pinout, or run a pre-made one.
- An OBD-II interface — the cable/tool that connects the harness to your PC.
- Flashing software. For P01/P59 read and write, many people use the free, open-source PCM Hammer. For actual custom tuning (changing the calibration, not just moving files), you'll want HP Tuners — or send it to us.
The connections that matter
A bench setup only needs a handful of pins on the PCM connector. Conceptually, you're supplying:
- Constant 12V (battery power that stays on)
- Switched / ignition 12V (the line you'll cycle to trigger the flash)
- Ground
- Serial data — the communication line that ties to the data pin on your OBD-II interface

Step by step
- Wire the harness to the four connection points above, double-checking each pin against the pinout for your PCM.
- Apply constant 12V and ground. Confirm steady voltage before you do anything else.
- Connect your OBD-II interface to the data line and to your PC. Open your software (PCM Hammer for P01/P59 read/write).
- Read the current contents first and save them. Always have the original before you write — that's your safety net.
- Write your file. Do not interrupt it — no unplugging, no power dips, no bumped wires.
- Cycle the ignition line. This is the step people miss (next section).

The mistakes that brick a P59

- Power loss mid-write. A dying battery or flaky adapter at the wrong moment corrupts the flash. Use a solid supply.
- Wrong pins. Guessing pins instead of using the pinout. Verify every one.
