Replacing a GM ABS Module Without the Dealer

ABS light on, traction control acting up, or a brake module the scanner flagged as failed — and the dealer quote to fix it made you wince. A GM ABS module (EBCM) usually can't just be swapped in blind, but you don't need the dealer to do it either. Here's how it actually gets replaced.

Why ABS modules need programming

Like other GM controllers, the EBCM is configured to your vehicle. A replacement has to be programmed to your VIN and set up for your options — wheel speed configuration, traction/stability features, and so on — before the system works and the light goes out. That's the step people miss when a junkyard module "won't clear."

Your options without the dealer

1. A module programmed to your VIN

We supply and program GM ABS/EBCM modules for a wide range of trucks and SUVs — flashed to your vehicle, ready to bolt on.

2. Send us your replacement (or your original)

Have a used module, or want yours set up? Mail it in and we'll program it to your VIN. When the data has to carry over exactly, cloning is an option too — same idea we use on BCMs.

We program GM ABS / EBCM modules to your VIN across GMT800, GMT900, Colorado/Canyon, Equinox/Terrain, and more.

Platforms we cover

  • GMT800 & GMT900 trucks and SUVs (Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon)
  • Colorado / Canyon EBCM
  • Equinox / Terrain EBCM
  • Plus many car and crossover applications — ask if you don't see yours.

A note on the "non-replaceable" line

If a shop or dealer told you the ABS module is non-replaceable or has to be new from GM, read our non-replaceable module myth piece — the same programming and cloning logic that saves BCMs usually applies here too.

FAQ

Why won't a junkyard ABS module just work?

It's configured to the donor vehicle. It has to be programmed to your VIN and options first.

Will this turn off my ABS light?

If the module was the fault and it's programmed correctly for your vehicle, yes. Send us the codes and details and we'll confirm.

Do you supply the module or program mine?

Either — we stock programmed modules for many platforms, or we'll program the one you send in.

Tell us your vehicle and the ABS part number and we'll tell you the fix and the price — no dealer markup, same business day, Monday–Friday.
