Can You Use a Junkyard PCM? Programming a Used GM Computer

Short answer: yes, you can usually use a junkyard PCM — but it's not plug-and-play. A used computer still carries the previous vehicle's identity, and until that's changed, it won't run your vehicle right. Done correctly, a used PCM is a cheap, solid fix. Done wrong, it's a no-start and a headache.

Why a used PCM won't just work

A GM PCM stores data tied to the vehicle it came out of — the VIN, the calibration, and security information. Drop it into your truck as-is and you'll typically get security faults, running problems, or a no-start, because the computer thinks it's still in the other vehicle.

To make it yours, it has to be reprogrammed: VIN changed to your vehicle, loaded with the correct operating system and calibration, and set up so security (VATS / Passlock) matches your setup.

Getting the right one in the first place

The return vs. return-less trap

On LS trucks specifically, the PCM's fuel programming depends on whether you have a return-style or return-less fuel system — the injector math is different.
