LS Swap Wiring: DBW vs DBC and What Your PCM Needs
Every LS swap runs into the same fork early on: drive-by-wire (DBW) or drive-by-cable (DBC)? It decides your throttle setup, part of your harness, and what the PCM needs programmed. Pick the path that fits your engine and parts, and the swap gets a lot simpler.
DBW vs. DBC — the difference
Drive-by-cable is the old way: a physical throttle cable from the pedal to a throttle body with a linkage. Simple, mechanical, no throttle electronics.
Drive-by-wire is electronic: the pedal is a sensor that feeds the TAC (Throttle Actuator Control) module, which tells an electric throttle body how far to open and talks to the PCM. GM went DBW on the Corvette in 1997 and across trucks by around 2003.
Going drive-by-wire
If your engine/PCM is DBW, you need the matching pieces:
- The electronic throttle body for your engine.
- The gas pedal assembly (it's a sensor, not a cable).
- The TAC module and the short pedal-to-TAC harness.
- A PCM programmed so the TAC and PCM communicate — if they don't, the throttle won't operate and you'll set faults.
We break down the TAC modules, pedals, and throttle body connectors by year in our GM Drive-By-Wire Guide.
Going drive-by-cable
Prefer to keep it mechanical? A DBC conversion uses a cable throttle body and pedal, which can simplify the wiring — but it has to match your intake and the PCM has to be set up for cable throttle. It's a popular route on older swaps where you don't want throttle electronics.
What the PCM needs — either way
Whichever throttle path you choose, the swap PCM has to be programmed for your combo:
- Throttle setup — DBW communication, or DBC configuration.
- Security off — VATS/Passlock deleted so a swapped PCM starts and runs (VATS/Passlock Delete).
- The tune for your cam, injectors, and hardware — idle, fuel, and drivability.
Harness and flashing
Building your own harness or flashing the swap PCM on the bench? See our bench flashing guide and the P01/P59 pinout. Injector scaling matters too — reference the LS Injector Data page.
FAQ
Which is better, DBW or DBC?
Neither is "better" — match your engine and parts. DBW gives modern throttle control; DBC keeps it mechanical and can simplify wiring.
Can I convert a DBW engine to cable?
Often yes, with the right cable throttle body and PCM setup. Tell us your engine and we'll advise.
Do I have to delete security on a swap?
Usually, so a swapped PCM starts without the donor vehicle's anti-theft. We handle it in the tune.
