GM AFM/DOD Delete: The Complete Parts + Tune Guide
Active Fuel Management (AFM) — and its earlier name, Displacement on Demand (DOD) — shuts off cylinders under light load to save fuel. In theory it's efficiency. In practice it's one of the most common reasons GM V8s tick, misfire, burn oil, and drop a lifter. That's why so many 4.3–6.2L owners delete it.
A proper delete is two halves: the hardware and the tune. Skip either and it won't run right. Here's the whole job.
What AFM is — and why it fails
AFM deactivates half the cylinders by using special lifters and a set of oil-control solenoids in the lifter valley. When it works, the engine runs on four cylinders at cruise. When it fails — and it does — the usual signs are a lifter tick, a misfire, oil consumption, and eventually a collapsed AFM lifter that can take out more than itself.
Deleting it removes the failure-prone hardware entirely and locks the engine into running on all cylinders, all the time.
What the hardware side involves
At a high level, a delete replaces the AFM hardware with standard parts:
- A valley cover / delete plate to replace the stock cover that houses the AFM oil-control solenoids.
- Non-AFM lifters (and guides) in place of the deactivating ones.
- Depending on your engine, a camshaft decision (more on VVT below).
- The supporting gaskets, seals, head gaskets and bolts you'll disturb getting in there.

VVT: keep it or delete it?
Many 2007+ engines added Variable Valve Timing (VVT) — the 6.0L LY6, L76, and the 6.2L family in trucks all had it, and from 2010 on every 5.3L did too. If your engine has VVT, you've got a choice during the delete:
- Keep VVT — delete AFM only, leave variable timing in place.
- Delete VVT too — this requires a non-VVT timing cover, the correct cam gear, and cam gear bolts on top of the cam swap.
Either way is fine — it just changes the parts and the calibration. The parts list covers both paths.
Why the tune is mandatory
This is the part people try to skip, and it's the part that makes the whole job work. Even after you pull every piece of AFM hardware, the ECM still thinks the vehicle has AFM. It'll command cylinder deactivation, throw codes, run poorly, and can cause problems fighting hardware that's no longer there.
The tune disables AFM (and VVT, if you deleted it) in the calibration, clears the related codes, and dials in idle, fuel, and drivability for the setup you now have. Hardware without the tune is a check-engine light waiting to happen. The tune is what turns a pile of parts into a truck that idles and drives right.
DIY vs. done-for-you: the cost picture
The parts are the bulk of the cost and the labor is real — this is an intake-off, valley-open job. The tune is the small, mandatory piece that makes it all function. Whether you do the wrench work yourself or have a shop handle it, budget for the delete tune as part of the job, not an afterthought.

FAQ
Can I delete AFM without tuning?
No. The ECM will still command AFM and set codes. The tune is required for the delete to work.
Do I have to delete VVT if I delete AFM?
No — you can keep VVT and delete only AFM. Deleting VVT is optional and changes the parts and tune.
Will a delete stop my lifter tick / misfire for good?
Removing the AFM hardware removes the AFM-specific failure. Send us your details and we'll make sure the calibration matches your parts.
I have an LS4 or LH6 — is my delete different?
Yes, those E40 applications use a different trigger setup. Check the parts list or ask us before ordering parts.
