How to Build a GM Bench Harness for P01 / P59 / 0411

A bench harness is what lets you power up and communicate with a GM PCM off the vehicle — on your workbench. It's the foundation for bench flashing, recovering a module that won't talk in the car, or programming a spare before install. For the P01/P59/0411 family it comes down to a handful of connections done right.

What a bench harness actually is

It's a short harness that plugs into the PCM connector on one end and breaks out to the essentials on the other: power, ground, the ignition line, and the data line to your OBD-II interface. That's it — you're recreating just enough of the vehicle's wiring to power the computer and talk to it.

The connections you need

On the P01/P59/0411 you only need a few pins on the connector:

  • Constant 12V — steady battery power.
  • Switched / ignition 12V — the line you'll cycle to trigger a flash.
  • Ground.
  • Serial data — to the data pin on your OBD-II connector/interface.

The exact pin numbers matter — get them from the verified pinout rather than guessing:

What else you'll need

  • A clean 12V power supply — a spare battery is safest; a weak supply causes failed flashes.
  • An OBD-II interface and your flashing software.
  • Connectors/terminals for the PCM plug, plus wire.

Build it, or skip the build

Building one is very doable with the pinout in hand. But if you've got a one-off job — or you just want something that works the first time — we make bench harnesses and the Brute Force Bench Flasher so you can plug in and go.

Then flash it right

Once your harness is built, the flashing process — including the 10-second ignition-off step that trips people up — is in our bench flash guide. And before you load any OS, check the OS Compatibility Guide so you don't lock a module.

FAQ

Does one harness work for P01 and P59?

The P01/P59/0411 share the same bench setup — just confirm your exact pins on the pinout.

What power supply is best?

A spare 12V battery, or a quality regulated supply that won't sag during a write.

Can I use this to tune, or just flash?

The harness powers the PCM for reading and writing. Building a custom calibration is a separate step — HP Tuners, or send it to us.

Want the harness done for you? Grab a pre-made one, or send us your module and we'll flash it. Questions on your PCM? Send the service number — same business day, Monday–Friday.
