GM Chassis Control Module Programming — 84619423 | 2016–2019 Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon
GM CHASSIS CONTROL MODULE 84196606 — PROGRAMMED TO YOUR VIN
Your replacement Chassis Control Module arrives already programmed to your VIN with the correct calibration for your truck. Plug it in and go. No dealer appointment, no scan tool, no drive-in programming session. A blank or used CCM will not work in your vehicle. This module is VIN-matched and calibration-specific from the factory, and GM requires setup programming any time one is replaced. We handle that for you before it ships.
WHAT THE CHASSIS CONTROL MODULE DOES
On 2016–2018 GM trucks and SUVs, the Chassis Control Module (GM designator K38) is the brain of the factory integrated trailer brake controller (RPO JL1). It: Reads the trailer brake gain and manual apply input from the dash-mounted controller Determines whether the connected trailer uses electromagnetic or electro-over-hydraulic brakes and adapts its output accordingly Commands the Trailer Brake Power Control Module (K133), which drives the actual trailer brake output on circuit 47 Reports trailer connection status and faults to the driver information center over the vehicle data bus The CCM is mounted on the rear underbody, above the spare tire, alongside the Trailer Brake Power Control Module.
SYMPTOMS OF A FAILED CHASSIS CONTROL MODULE
"Service Trailer Brake System" message on the driver information center "Check Trailer Wiring" message with a trailer connected DTC C1114 stored in the CCM Trailer brake controller display blank, dashed out, or showing no gain adjustment No trailer brake output with a known-good trailer and known-good 7-pin connector CCM missing from the module list or showing "no communication" on a scan tool If your scan tool cannot communicate with the CCM at all, confirm power and ground at the connector before ordering. A module that has been water-damaged from its underbody mounting location is a common failure on these trucks.
CHOOSE YOUR OPTION
Option 1 — Send Us Your Module (Programming Service) — $150 Ship us your existing 84196606 module. We program it to your VIN with the current GM calibration and ship it back. Typical turnaround is 24 hours from receipt. Best option if your module is electrically good but was pulled from another vehicle, or if you already sourced a used replacement.
Option 2 — Buy a Programmed Module — $350 We supply the module, programmed to your VIN, ready to install out of the box. No core required. Best option if your original is water-damaged, corroded, or physically destroyed. What we need from you: Full 17-digit VIN Confirmation of engine (gas or diesel) RPO code list from the glovebox label if you have it — this saves troubleshooting

AFTER INSTALLATION
Disconnect the battery negative cable before removing the old module. The CCM is on the rear underbody above the spare tire. Expect road grime and corrosion on the connector — clean and inspect it before plugging in the new module. Install the module, reconnect the connector, and reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition on and clear any stored DTCs. Connect a trailer and verify the trailer brake controller display shows a gain value and responds to the manual apply lever. No relearn or theft-deterrent procedure is required for this module. If a "Service Trailer Brake System" message returns after installation, the fault is almost always the K133 Trailer Brake Power Control Module, the 7-pin connector, or trailer-side wiring — not the CCM.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do I need to send my VIN? Yes. The Chassis Control Module is VIN-programmed. Include your full 17-digit VIN at checkout or text it to 605-728-0591 after ordering. Can a used chassis control module be reprogrammed? Yes. Contrary to what most dealers will tell you, a used 84196606 from a donor vehicle can be reprogrammed to your VIN with the correct calibration. What is the turnaround time? Typically, 24 hours from the time your module arrives. Will this fix my "Service Trailer Brake System" message? It will if the fault is in the CCM — commonly indicated by DTC C1114 or a complete loss of communication with the module. Diagnose before ordering or send us your scan data and we'll help you confirm. Do I need a dealer or a scan tool to install it? No. The module arrives fully programmed. Installation is mechanical only.
