What Is a Body Control Module?

The Body Control Module (BCM) is the central electronic controller for your vehicle's body functions — power windows, door locks, interior and exterior lighting, turn signals, security system, climate control, remote start, and instrument cluster communication. On newer GM vehicles it also manages CAN gateway functions between the vehicle's multiple data networks.

When a BCM fails, common symptoms include erratic window or lock operation, lights not responding correctly, security malfunctions, no-start or no-crank conditions, remote start failure, and multiple DTCs across several systems.

A replacement BCM must be programmed to your vehicle's VIN before installation. Without programming, the module will not communicate with the rest of the vehicle. That's what we do.

After Installation

Your BCM arrives fully programmed, but a standard post-install procedure is required:

Anti-Theft / Immobilizer Relearn (Required) GM vehicles require a standard immobilizer relearn after any BCM replacement to sync the new module with your keys and ECM. This is a 30-minute procedure that requires no special tools:

  1. Ensure battery is fully charged (12.5V minimum).

  2. Insert key and turn to RUN (do not start). Wait 10 minutes. Turn to OFF.

  3. Turn to RUN. Wait 10 minutes. Turn to OFF.

  4. Turn to RUN. Wait 10 minutes. Turn to OFF.

  5. The next key cycle will relearn the immobilizer data. The vehicle should now start.

For push-button start vehicles, the procedure may differ slightly. Contact us after install and we'll walk you through it.

Airbag Light / DTC B1001 (Option Configuration Error) An SDM Primary Key Setup procedure may be required. This requires a Tech2 or compatible J2534 scan tool. We can walk you through this if needed.

Why Buy From Us?

Dealerships charge $500+ for BCM programming alone — on top of the module cost. We handle VIN programming, calibration flashing, option configuration, and feature additions for a fraction of the dealer price. We can also add features like cruise control and fog lights that the dealer would charge you separately for, if they'd even do it at all.

If you have questions about your specific vehicle, part number, or which family your BCM belongs to, contact us before ordering and we'll confirm compatibility.
