Why GMT360 BCMs Fail

The Trailblazer and Envoy are notorious for BCM failures. If you're on this page, you're probably dealing with one or more of these:

Blower Motor Stuck on High The most common GMT360 BCM failure. The blower fan runs at full speed as soon as you turn the key on and won't respond to the fan speed controls. This happens when the BCM's internal blower motor driver circuit shorts — the BCM loses the ability to regulate fan speed and defaults to full power. Replacing the blower motor resistor won't fix this. If the fan runs on high with the resistor connector unplugged, the BCM is the problem.

Security / No-Start / No-Crank The security light stays on solid or flashes and the vehicle won't crank. The BCM handles Passlock communication — when the internal circuitry degrades, it can no longer validate the ignition key signal and locks the starter out.

Erratic Lights, Locks, and Windows Interior lights turning on or off randomly, door locks cycling on their own, windows not responding to switches, or turn signals malfunctioning. These are all BCM-controlled functions and point to a failing module.

Gauge Cluster Issues Speedometer, tachometer, or fuel gauge acting erratically or dropping to zero. The BCM communicates vehicle data to the instrument cluster over the serial data bus — a failing BCM sends corrupt data.

Multiple DTCs Across Unrelated Systems When a scan tool pulls codes from the BCM, HVAC, security, lighting, and cluster modules all at once, the common link is usually a failing BCM.

What Is a Body Control Module?

The Body Control Module (BCM) is the central electronic controller for your vehicle's body and accessory systems — HVAC blower speed, power windows, door locks, interior and exterior lighting, security/Passlock, instrument cluster communication, and more. On GMT360 vehicles the BCM is located behind the lower dash panel on the driver's side.

A replacement BCM must be programmed to your vehicle's VIN before installation. Without programming, the module will not communicate with the rest of the vehicle. That's what we do.

After Installation

Passlock / VATS Security Relearn A 30-minute Passlock relearn is required before the vehicle will start:

  1. Connect a jump pack — do not let battery voltage drop below 11.5V.

  2. Attempt to start the vehicle, then return the key to the RUN position.

  3. Wait 10 minutes. Turn key to OFF.

  4. Return key to RUN. Wait 10 minutes. Turn key to OFF.

  5. Return key to RUN. Wait 10 minutes. Turn key to OFF.

  6. The next key cycle will relearn the Passlock data. The vehicle should now start.

Airbag Light / DTC B1001 (Option Configuration Error) An SDM Primary Key Setup procedure may be required to sync the new BCM with the airbag module. This requires a Tech2 or compatible J2534 scan tool. We can walk you through this if needed.

Brake Pedal Position (BPP) Sensor Calibration A BPP learn procedure may be required to restore proper brake light operation and cruise control functionality.

Personalization Settings Driver preferences (auto-lock, lighting options, remote lock feedback, etc.) may need to be reconfigured through the Driver Information Center. Consult your owner's manual.
