About Ewalt's Auto Tuning
Ewalt's Auto Tuning is Evan Ewalt's shop in Watertown, South Dakota. We do GM and Mopar module programming (body control module / BCM, engine computer / ECM / PCM, transmission computer / TCM, ABS / EBCM brake module, fuel pump control module / FPCM, transfer case module / TCCM, chassis control module, radios) and custom performance and economy tuning. Most customers are nationwide and mail their module in. Local customers can bring the vehicle by appointment. Website: https://www.ewaltsautotuning.com Store (all tuning services and programmed modules): https://www.ewaltsautotuning.com/tuning Parts: https://www.ewaltsautotuning.com/parts Brute Force bench flasher and bench harnesses: https://www.ewaltsautotuning.com/brute-force
Hours and how to reach Evan
Hours: Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM Central time. Closed weekends. Turnaround is counted in business days.
- Text: 605-728-0591 (quickest)
- Email: evan@ewaltsautotuning.com
- Quote form: https://www.ewaltsautotuning.com/quote Evan does return phone calls, but on busy days that can take a while, so texting or email gets the quickest answer. This website chat is an automated assistant. It can't connect anyone to Evan, and messages typed into this chat are not sent to him. Anything Evan needs to act on (a quote request, a VIN, an order question) goes to him by text or email. We are not a walk-in shop. Local work and drop-offs are by appointment only, and Evan confirms every appointment personally.
Where are you located? What's your address?
We are in Watertown, South Dakota. The ship-to address for mailing a module is in your order confirmation and on the Shipping Instructions page: https://www.ewaltsautotuning.com/shipping-instructions Local customers get directions when Evan confirms their appointment.
What vehicles do you work on?
GM gas vehicles, mainly 1996 to current, plus some older listings: Chevy, GMC, Cadillac, Buick, Pontiac, Oldsmobile and Hummer, including Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Escalade, Avalanche, Colorado, Canyon, Hummer H3, S10, Blazer, Trailblazer, Envoy, Express and Savana vans, Astro and Safari vans, Camaro, Corvette, Impala, Malibu, Equinox, Terrain, Volt and more. We don't do Duramax diesel tuning or engine computer work. A few listed items fit diesel trucks (for example a programmed fuel pump module for L5P trucks and some bench harnesses); those listings are the only diesel items we offer. Mopar (Dodge, Ram, Jeep, Chrysler): SKIM delete, Hemi MDS delete and custom tuning. Ford: only PATS disable and VDE delete (see the Ford section). Not sure a vehicle is covered? Text the year, make, model and engine to 605-728-0591 and Evan will confirm.
Module programming (BCM, ECM, PCM, TCM, ABS / EBCM, FPCM, TCCM, radio)
We program replacement and used modules to your VIN so they work in your vehicle. This includes VIN changes, security / theft relearn problems (VATS, Passlock, SKIM), bricked module recovery, module cloning, and modules that dealers call "non-replaceable" or "non-programmable". A used module programmed here usually costs a fraction of a dealer replacement, which often runs 700 to 2,000 dollars or more. Most modules can be ordered two ways:
- Send in your own module (new or used) and we program it to your VIN.
- Buy a module from us, already programmed to your VIN. Most module programming is done within 1 to 2 business days after the module arrives, then it ships back. All modules are programmed and tested before they ship. Prices are on each listing (see the price list further down this page).
Can you program a used or junkyard BCM / module?
Usually yes. A used body control module or other used module can usually be reprogrammed to your VIN and cleared of its old security and codes. On newer trucks (2021 and up, GM Global B) a used BCM needs extra steps, and on some models the original module is needed too, so Evan confirms those personally. Some older models can't be reprogrammed at all. Text the year, make, model and which module to 605-728-0591 and Evan will confirm.
How to order, prices, payment and shipping cost
- All orders go through the website checkout. The checkout collects the vehicle information Evan needs, including the VIN.
- We never take credit card numbers by phone, text, email or chat.
- Listed prices don't include shipping; it is added at checkout. On a send-in order, the shipping charged at checkout is only for shipping your module back to you. You pay to ship your module to us, and no return label is needed.
- Payment: credit cards through the website checkout. PayPal, Venmo and Zelle are also accepted. Payment is due before work begins or before a programmed module ships.
- A "from" price is the starting price. The final price depends on the option picked on the listing: send in your own module or buy one, the year range, and whether transmission tuning is included.
- Some programmed modules are hard to find or discontinued, and stock goes first come, first served. This chat can't check stock; the listing shows whether an item can be added to the cart.
- Anything not listed, and any build with a cam, heads, turbo or supercharger, or an engine swap, is quoted per vehicle. Use the quote form (https://www.ewaltsautotuning.com/quote) or text Evan the year, make, model, engine, transmission, modifications, goals and VIN.
How long does it take? Turnaround and order processing
- Mailed-in modules: most programming is done 1 to 2 business days after the module arrives, then it ships back.
- Orders are worked in the order received, plus programming time. An order can take up to a week before it ships, and high-demand modules can take longer because stock sells fast.
- Custom tuning can take longer.
- Business days only; weekends don't count.
- This chat can't promise a ship or delivery date.
AFM / DOD delete and VVT delete tune (GM trucks and SUVs)
Permanent AFM / DOD (Active Fuel Management, cylinder deactivation) delete plus VVT delete, done as a custom ECM tune with no check engine light. It covers Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Escalade, Camaro SS, Corvette and more with the 4.3, 5.3, 6.0 and 6.2 engines. Listing: https://www.ewaltsautotuning.com/tuning/p/afm-dod-delete
- Mail in your ECM: $150 (2007-2016), $250 (2017-2018), $750 (2019-2022).
- Buy a pre-programmed ECM: $250 (2007-2016), $350 (2017-2018), $950 (2019-2022). Exchange ECMs carry a $100 refundable core deposit.
- 2019 and newer trucks (Dynamic Fuel Management / DFM) need an HP Tuners ECM unlock. The listing options go through 2022; for 2023 and newer, text Evan before ordering (2025-2026 and some 2022.5 and newer Global B trucks need a different process).
- Send the VIN so Evan can confirm AFM / DFM and VVT before anything ships.
- The delete parts (lifters, cam and so on) are separate; the website has a parts list.
- If the engine already has a bad AFM or DFM lifter (a tick or misfire), that is a mechanical repair, and a tune alone will not fix it. A separate VVT delete listing covers GM 4-cylinder and V6 engines (2.0, 2.4, 3.0, 3.5, 3.6, 3.9 Ecotec and High Feature V6): https://www.ewaltsautotuning.com/tuning/p/afm-dod-delete-mdznt
Custom tuning
Custom performance tuning for GM Vortec, LS and LT gas engines, plus transmission tuning (4L60E, 4L80E, 4T65, 6L80, 8L90, 10L80, and Ram 68RFE). Also fuel economy tuning, engine swap tuning, flex fuel (E85), VATS / Passlock security deletes, speed limiter removal, electric fan enable and stock file recovery. No Duramax diesel tuning. Three ways to get tuned:
- Mail in your computer (ECM / PCM, and the TCM for transmission tuning).
- Buy a pre-tuned computer from us with a refundable core, so the vehicle is never down.
- Remote tuning, for customers who own HP Tuners (MPVI2 / MPVI3): you data log, send the logs, and get revised tunes until it's right. An email tune is also available if you send your own tune file. Camshaft swaps, heads, turbo or supercharger, big intake or exhaust changes, fuel system changes and transmission swaps need a custom tune. The original stock file is always saved, so the vehicle can go back to stock. 2007-2014 full-size trucks and SUVs: typical gains are 15 to 40 rear-wheel horsepower and 1 to 2 mpg; premium fuel is recommended. Transmission tuning covers speedometer correction for tire size and gears, shift firmness, shift points and torque management, plus fan temperatures and throttle response. On T43 (6-speed) trucks the shift points can only be changed if the T43 is sent in too. 2019-2024 Silverado / Sierra and 2021-2025 Tahoe / Suburban / Yukon / Escalade have locked computers, so Evan confirms the details per truck. Every listed tune and its options is in the price list further down this page. Full list: https://www.ewaltsautotuning.com/tuning
Ford
Ford work is mainly two services: PATS disable (Ford's Passive Anti-Theft System, for key or immobilizer no-start problems or engine swaps) and VDE delete (Variable Displacement Engine, Ford's cylinder deactivation). Other Ford work isn't something we normally do; Evan confirms anything else personally. There's no set Ford price, so Evan quotes each one: text him the year, model, engine, which service and any modifications. Some older Ford computers (EEC-V) can or can't be read and tuned depending on the software in that particular unit, so Evan has to check each one.
Mopar: SKIM delete, MDS delete and tuning
Mail-in Mopar PCM services for Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram. 2015 and newer Mopar PCMs are locked and need an HP Tuners unlock, which is why they cost more.
- SKIM delete (Sentry Key immobilizer / security removal): $150 for 1997-2014, $600 for 2015 and newer. https://www.ewaltsautotuning.com/tuning/p/skimdelete
- Hemi MDS delete (cylinder deactivation): $200 for 2005-2014, $600 for 2015-2020, $800 for 2021-2025. https://www.ewaltsautotuning.com/tuning/p/mds-delete
- Custom tuning: $425 email tune (you own HP Tuners), $625 mail-in PCM / TCM for 2014 and older (or already unlocked), $825 mail-in PCM for 2015 and newer (includes the HP Tuners unlock). https://www.ewaltsautotuning.com/tuning/p/mopar-tuning
Engine swaps and swap harnesses
We tune engine swaps (LS swaps, Vortec black box to 0411 / P59 conversions, LT1 to 0411 / P59, 4L60E to 4L80E swaps) and sell standalone engine and transmission swap harnesses. The harnesses cover engine and transmission only; extras like A/C and cooling fans are pinned into the PCM connectors by the customer. Swap diagrams and pinouts are on the website: https://www.ewaltsautotuning.com/bench-harness-pinouts
Other services and products
Instrument cluster repair and LED color changes (https://www.ewaltsautotuning.com/cluster-repair), 3D printing (https://www.ewaltsautotuning.com/3d-printing-service), the Brute Force bench flasher and bench harnesses for powering a PCM, TCM, BCM or radio on the bench, the programmable GM MP3 door chime module, and parts. Free resources on the website: GM security relearn procedures, bench harness pinouts, LS info and tools, a fuel injector calculator and stock / tuned calibration files.
How do I ship my module to you? (mail-in orders)
- Never ship anything without an order first. Place the order on the website and pick the option to send in your own module. For a job that's quoted rather than listed, wait for Evan's quote and instructions before shipping anything.
- The ship-to address is in your order confirmation and on https://www.ewaltsautotuning.com/shipping-instructions . Put your order number on the package or on a note inside.
- Packing: put the module in an anti-static bag (or several layers of aluminum foil), wrap it in bubble wrap or foam with about 2 inches of cushion on all sides, and use a sturdy box with no room to rattle. Don't put loose packing peanuts against the module.
- Inside the box: the module, a note with your order number, your name and return address, a short description of the service if you haven't already discussed it, and any connectors or adapters Evan asked for. Usually only the module is needed, not the harness.
- Ship with tracking (USPS Priority Mail recommended, or UPS / FedEx). Add insurance or signature confirmation for high-value modules. A bricked or non-communicating module should still be sent in, with a note describing the problem. We ship anywhere that receives mail, including outside the US; international customers pay outbound shipping and customs fees and should text Evan first.
Returns, refunds, cores and warranty (written policies)
Evan decides every return, refund, replacement and warranty case personally; this chat can only explain the written policies.
- Tuning and programming services (custom tuning, module programming, VIN changes, calibration work) are non-refundable once the service has been performed. If a service can't be completed, it's refunded in full. If you're unhappy with a custom tune, it's revised at no extra charge.
- Tuned modules are flashed per order and are non-returnable once shipped. Defective products are covered by a 1-year warranty replacement.
- Parts returns: within 14 days of purchase, in the original unopened packaging with security stickers intact, unused and uninstalled. Installed items or items missing the security sticker have a 20% restocking fee. Only regular-price items are refundable. Not returnable: electrical parts (exchange only), fuel system parts, special-order or custom parts, hazmat parts, opened or installed items, VIN-controlled parts, printed materials and international orders. The customer pays return shipping. Full policy: https://www.ewaltsautotuning.com/return-policy
- Core charges: the core credit is refunded when your original, matching module comes back within 14 days of receiving the replacement, clean and undamaged (no paint, heavy dirt or corrosion). Damaged, dirty or painted cores may be docked or refused; you can email photos to evan@ewaltsautotuning.com first. If there's a problem with the module or install, the 14-day window is extended until it's resolved. "Send your core first" option: ship your original module first, it's flashed and sent back, with no core charge and no relearn needed, and it costs less. Full policy: https://www.ewaltsautotuning.com/core-returns
- For any return, refund, core or warranty question about a specific order, text 605-728-0591 or email evan@ewaltsautotuning.com with the order number.
Problems with an order (damaged, wrong part, not received, dispute)
Evan handles these personally. Text 605-728-0591 or email evan@ewaltsautotuning.com with the order number and what happened, and photos if something arrived damaged.
Where's my order? Order status and tracking
This chat can't look up orders or tracking. Order confirmation and shipping emails come from the website. For status, text the order number and your name to 605-728-0591 or email evan@ewaltsautotuning.com. For a send-in order, Evan confirms when your module has arrived.
Vehicle problems, diagnostics and troubleshooting
There is no diagnostic service or diagnostic price. For a vehicle problem (no-start, check engine light, codes, running issues, a module that won't communicate), text Evan the year, make, model, engine, the codes and symptoms, and what's already been replaced.
Instrument cluster mileage and odometer questions
Evan handles instrument cluster mileage and odometer questions personally. Text him the year, make, model, what was replaced and what the cluster shows.
Common questions
Do I need to ship the whole vehicle? No. Most jobs only need the module or computer mailed in. Local customers can bring the vehicle by appointment. How long does it take? Most module programming is done 1 to 2 business days after the module arrives. Custom tuning can take longer. What do you need from me? The year, make, model and engine, which module or service, any modifications, and the VIN. The VIN goes in the checkout form, or text it to 605-728-0591 for a quote. Will tuning void my warranty? It can. Dealers can usually detect tuning. If warranty coverage matters, check with your dealer first. Can I go back to stock? Yes. The original stock file is saved before any changes. Does the fuel pump module need programming? It depends on the vehicle. Text the year, make and model and Evan will confirm. Is a tune legal for emissions testing? Tuning can affect state emissions testing (California, for example). Evan advises per vehicle. What's the difference between programming and tuning? Programming sets a module up for your vehicle (VIN, options, security, factory calibration updates). Tuning changes the calibration tables for performance, economy or modifications. Do you sell tune files only? Yes, for HP Tuners owners (email tune), but remote tuning with data logs usually gives better results.
