4L60E to 4L80E Wiring Harness Conversion Guide

This procedure outlines the harness modifications and PCM repinning required to convert a 1999-2007 GM 1/2-ton 5.3L 4L60E harness for use with a 4L80E transmission.

Compatibility:

  • 1999-2007 Vortec Trucks

  • 1999-2002 LS1 Applications

  • 2004 GTO (Note: factory wire colors may vary)

PCM Connector Types: 1999-2002 (Blue/Red) and 2003+ (Blue/Green). Wire pinout locations remain identical across these years.

1. Transmission Connector Pinout Modifications

The 4L80E requires modifying the round gray transmission plug. Remove the bottom pin cover by lifting the plastic retaining tabs and pushing the pins out the back of the connector.

Modifications (Middle Row: L, M, N, P, R, S | Bottom Row: T, U):

  • REMOVE: White wire at Location S

  • REMOVE: Tan/Black wire at Location T

  • MOVE: Brown wire from Location U to the now-empty Location S

Note: Apply RTV silicone to seal the empty T and U cavities to prevent moisture ingress.

2. Input Speed Sensor (ISS) Wiring

The 4L80E utilizes two speed sensors (Input and Output), whereas the 4L60E only uses one (Output/VSS). The wires removed in Step 1 will be repurposed for the 4L80E Input Speed Sensor (ISS) GM 88987993.

  • ISS Pigtail Installation: Terminate the removed White and Tan/Black wires into a new 2-pin speed sensor pigtail. Polarity is not critical; the wires can be installed in either cavity.

  • ISS Routing: Connect this new pigtail to the Input Speed Sensor located above the shifter shaft on the side of the 4L80E case.

  • VSS Routing: Connect the existing 4L60E VSS wires (twisted Purple/White and Green/Black) to the rear speed sensor. (Located directly above the main transmission connector on 2WD units, or in the transfer case adapter/output housing on 4WD applications).

3. PCM Repinning Requirements

To establish the turbine speed sensor signal, the White and Tan/Black wires must be reassigned at the PCM connectors. Follow the specific repin chart for your PCM hardware.

1999-2007 PCMs (Dual 80-Pin Connectors: Blue/Red or Blue/Green)

  • White Wire: * Remove from: C1 (Blue) - Pin 79

    • Move to: C2 (Red or Green) - Pin 22

  • Tan/Black Wire: * Remove from: C2 (Red or Green) - Pin 42

    • Move to: C2 (Red or Green) - Pin 23

1996-2000 Vortec PCMs (Black Finned Case, 4 or 5 Connectors)

(Transmission plug modifications remain identical to Step 1)

  • White Wire: * Remove from: C1 (Blue) - Pin 13

    • Move to: C3 (White/Clear) - Pin 7

  • Tan/Black Wire: * Remove from: C1 (Blue) - Pin 10

    • Move to: C3 (White/Clear) - Pin 8
